Dillyweed | Irody

There wasn’t any snow on the ground. Not yet. It was in the air. Threatening them with a cold blanket. But for now the trees and the ground were covered in a thick layer of frost. It made it all shimmer in the morning sun. Irody was busy collecting the last frozen berries. It was a gift for Obscura. This was their first official winter together and she really wanted to do something nice. Something that would make them remember it in the future. Something to look back onto.

Irody looked down on her creation. A practical buffet of different edible flowers and frozen berries that survived the frost all carefully organized in a pattern that looked almost like a flower on the ground with rows of different colours. Irody, the green Styracosaurus with a white marking over her beak that resembles a bird skull, looked pleased over her creation. It was hard work with no thumbs to make sure everything was as perfect as she had made it. Luckily she was no stranger to perfection. She often did everything she tried with an ounce of perfection and Obscura rarely told her differently. She was her biggest supporter. Also one of the few that she actually hung around so it wasn’t really surprising. Obscura, in contrast to the green Styracosaurus, was a brown Pachycephalosaurus with white covering her face, tail and legs as well as a white lace marking on her back covering her fawn markings slightly. She was the most beautiful Pachy Irody had ever seen. She outshone even all the Styras that Irody had ever met. They were rarely far apart from each other although they valued each other's personal space.

Irody moved a few things around in the arrangement on the floor. Food gifts were her love language. She loved collecting and arranging food in different patterns. Obscura always appreciated it as well which made her even more proud and happy about it. Food was her way of telling Obscura how much she meant to her because Irody didn’t have the best track record with saying it out loud. She was quite bad at it actually. She had said it. Perhaps not in the exact words, but with similar words to what she wanted to say. But food. Food spoke not only for itself but for her as well.

Irody took a step back, looking at her creation on the ground. A beautiful creation for sure. She had really outdone herself. She looked up at the sky. Obscura would get back soon. In perfect time for the berries to thaw out a little under the morning sun. She had left before the first sun because she needed to fix something and Irody, who needed to fix her gift, hadn't questioned it but told her to get back as soon as possible. She could’ve sworn that the Pachy had a mischievous smile on her face as she left. But once again she had not questioned it. To concentrate on her gift. Making up patterns in her head and trying to figure out what would be best. She couldn’t start it until the first rays of sun started to peek their way out over the horizon however.

Irody heard the common sound of two feet walking up slightly behind her. “Finally back I see.” She turned around to face the Pachy while also doing her best to cover the gift she had behind her.

Obscura had woken up with one goal on her mind, and one goal only. To find the perfect gift for her styracosaurus girlfriend, Irody. They both woke up early, and despite wanting to stay snuggled up together forever, Obscura’s mission chased her out of their warm home.
Obscura kissed her girlfriend on the cheek as she left. “I will be back by sunrise.” she said, as she ran off through the frosty grass.
The brown, feathered pachy made her way towards some old human settlements. She was hoping to find a pretty vessel of sorts to hide her gift in, so she wouldn't have to sneak it back home with the risk of Irody seeing the gift before she wanted her to.
She ran from house to house, looking for some extra trinkets along the way as well to include in her gift. The pachy managed to find plenty of sparkly and shiny things that Irody could perhaps decorate her horns with, or they could put it up in their home, whichever Irody preferred.

Some scavenging later, Obscura finally managed to find a box, decorated with colourful paper. It was so pretty, and perfect for her gorgeous partner. She quickly started to place all the trinkets she had found in the box before going back outside to prepare the actual gift, she wanted something handmade to be the star of the show, all other things were just bonuses.
Determined to create the perfect bouquet, Obscura headed back out to the fields and woods. Most things were frostbit and more or less wilted, but she managed to find some pretty well preserved green leaves on some branches that she bit off. She found some frosty flowers as well to add in with the pretty leaves. To get some more colour in there, Obscura gladly grabbed some of the still colourful autumn leaves as a wrapping around the bouquet, and to top it off she managed to find some exquisite berries hiding beneath some bushes that she eagerly added for both colour and as a little treat. She knew very well that Irody loved food.

As the pachy was finally happy with her creation and had gently placed it in the gift box, the sun was starting to rise. She picked up the box and made her way home and arrived just as the sun had risen over the treetops. Irody was waiting for her and turned to face her as she returned.
Finally back I see
Obscura nodded eagerly as she held the box in her arms. “I brought you this.” she excitedly said, her whole body itching in anticipation to see Irody’s reaction to what she had made and found for her.
“To celebrate our first winter as a couple, I figure a gift would be fitting.” she added with a smile so warm it could surely thaw the frost away. She handed Irody the box, her green eyes sparkling in anticipation.

Irody smiled big when Obscura showed her the box. It was a vibrant colour and she loved it. Obscura placed it carefully on the ground as Irody didn’t have any hands to grab it. Irody looked on in anticipation as Obscura opened it up.
“That’s so beautiful!” Irody said, her eyes practically sparkling. “I love it! And it’s such a coincidence.” Her voice mischievous as she moved her body to show Obscura what she had behind her. The flower and food arrangement had gotten a slightly brighter colour after all the frost had melted away.

“It’s interesting how we seemed to have the exact same idea.”

Obscura was delighted that Irody loved her gift, but just as she was about to dive in for a hug Irody said she had something for her as well and moved to the side. Behind her, a beautiful arrangement was revealed. There were flowers and berries placed perfectly in a beautiful pattern and Obscura squealed happily as she observed it.
“Oh Irody, I love you so much!” she exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around the styra’s neck in a warm, loving hug. “You're the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
