A Snowy Fella
There was just a tiny bit of snow left on the ground. Blades of grass were trying to keep themselves high towards the sun but they were covered in heavy frost. Soon they would be completely covered in the white blanket that the weather constantly threatened with. It would be the time of hibernation for most creatures. The time where everything becomes just a bit more still around the forest. The birds would still sing but in a more contemptuous way rather than the freeform style they used during spring and summer. A lot of animals would shed their summer fur if they already hadn’t and dawn a winter coat that would help them melt in with the wintery landscape. The two raptors that were currently walking down a small, beaten path in the forest, trying to avoid any collections of snow, were not one of those animals. Their feathery pelts would perhaps lose a bit of it’s sheen during the colder season as their feathers got roughed up by the frost and ice. But they did not shed their colours for a milder one. Then by spring they would shed their feathers and refresh their coats.
Chrail was a green raptor with a royal, heavy marking covering his back and sides while Öreis was a yellow raptor with rosette markings on his face and a ripple pattern across his back. They stood out in the cold, grey area. Öreis stood out in any season other than perhaps fall compared to Chrail who could melt to the surrounding area in any other season of the year. They were excited, both of them, to the extent that neither of them could talk. Last year they had tried to meet a Cryolophosaurus called Snow Fellow who had sadly been gone when they arrived. This year they had heard that he was in fact back again. They had never had the opportunity to meet him. They had gone out to look for him but they had gotten lost along the way and never ended up being part of his rescue. This year they were sure that they would meet him. They had heard about some of his wares. That he sometimes carried a particular fish with a particular ability to the ones that ate it. It could make their dreams come true. They had the dream last year already. But especially now. They had established themselves in the forest. Perhaps it was a lucky stroke that they hadn’t met Snow Fellow last year. Now they were even more ready for the responsibility of raising younglings. Almost too ready. They had waited on this chance.
They heard voices before they could see anyone. They didn’t know what Snow Fellow sounded like per say but they could assume that it was him based on how the conversation sounded like a transaction. They decided to wait a bit. Not wanting to disturb whatever customer he had. They could use a few minutes to catch their breath, the cold air made it slightly harder to take deep breaths. Soon enough the voices said clear goodbyes to each other. Chrail and Öreis looked at each other with their eyes filled with anticipation. Of course the thought crossed their minds that he might not have what they seek. Someone told them that he only carries it if he gets a real good deal. It’s not normally something he has all of the time and both Chrail and Öreis didn’t like to leave the cosy forest they lived beside to try and find the dealer that always had it in stock.
“Hello hello!” The voice carried to them quickly as they walked up to his little temporary shop setup. Both Chrail and Öreis gave nervous smiles as he started showing off every ware he thought they might be interested in. “I’ve got this thing over here. Perfect for decorating a hovel. Or a spare hovel perhaps. Oh- and this thing here. It’s a new thing I got while I was traveling. Marvelous piece of old history.” He could quickly see that he was losing them as both the two raptors' eyes were flicking over all the wares in front of them. Neither seeing what they seeked. “But of course. I can tell that you boys are seeking something special.” He had a wide smile on his lips. “If it’s not something I have right now, I am sure I could get my hands on it- for a fee of course.” He nodded to strengthen his conviction.
“We heard that you might carry a special type of fish.” It was Chrail that started speaking first of the both. Öreis stood slightly behind him. “A special type of Rainbow Trout.”
“Oh. Well. It’s not something I normally carry.” Öreis' heart fell for a bit as the Cryolophosaurus spoke. “And normally I would direct you both to the Oviraptor who always has it in stock. But luckily for both of you, this is not a normal day. I happen to have a few of them in stock actually. Got a really good price.” He quickly walked behind a few trees where, hidden under a few leaves and sticks were a small bag. Öreis almost jumped up and down when he saw the tail of a rainbow coloured trout sticking up out of it. “How many did you want?” He asked with clenched teeth.
“Well. How many do we need, do you think?” Snow Fellow looked them both over.
“I would say start with one.” He took it carefully out of the bag. “And I will give you an extra good price on the first one.”
Neither Chrail or Öreis tried to haggle with him. They didn’t know better. And it did seem as if Snow fellow gave them a good price. They could afford it. That was good enough for both of them. Chrail and Snow Fellow chatted for a bit. It was mostly Chrail asking questions about where the Cryolophosaurus travelled overall. Snow Fellow happily answered his questions. But as another customer emerged from the forest both Chrail and Öreis thanked the Cryolophosaurus and started to head away so as to not disturb the salesman or the customer anymore.
