Dam It 1

It was just another spring day for a young sty. Meaning the young bachelor was sleeping the morning away, letting his body bake in the sun. It wasn’t quite warm enough to just enjoy the change of season on the go. Pinecones stretched his body, scrapping his face against the grass and dirt. But, in his lazy antics, there was a sudden flush of cold against the side of his face.

With a snort of a alarm, he rolled back up to just loaf as normal, shaking his face free of the sudden chill. But this chill did not go away, instead now moved to his legs and stomach. Upon inspection there seemed to be a small stream of water pushing its way through the moss and grass he had taken claim too. But why? It wasn’t raining, where was this water coming from? Then again, how much did he care that there was water now. It just gave the young sty a nice refreshing drink, right?

“No, no not right…” he gruffed to himself, slowly working into a stand and stretch. His nap spot was now all soggy and no longer enjoyable. Time to see what ruined his peace, his sleepy blue eyes combed the ground, watching a moment as the stream flowed around his feet. Identifying the course of the water, it was time to find the source. It started as a slow walk, but the sound of the water splashes and the feel of it started to bring a little amusement. Eventually turning into a fast walk, then a trot, and as much of a gallop as a sty’s body would allow. The water getting deeper as he run which just caused more excitement, like a bull that was just let loose in a field.

Forgetting what he was even investigating for a moment, until…

-CRACK-

Pinecones sliding to a stop and looking around in alarm, was that another beast? Maybe a carnivore even… but rather, there was another sharp crack his eyes catching movement just in time. Doing a quick burst forward before a tall tree came thumping down to the earth where he stood. Even seeing a smaller tree or two fall a little further away. Who had a grudge against the trees. Pinecones proceeded with a bit more caution now, lest he get knocked out by falling trees.

He kept his gaze up, anticipating something far larger than himself to be out here deforesting. However, has he walked all he was greeted by was some soft chittering and sounds of chewing.

Looking around in confusion at first, before lowering his gaze to the ground around him. It wasn’t another dinosaur like he expected, but rather something comically small compared to himself. They looked soft, fluffy, and particularly round. “What are you?” he grunted, resulting in spooking the ones closest to him. Seems they didn’t understand he wasn’t some big meat eater. Pinecones curiously followed the spooked animals, watching them dive into the pond that was definitely not here before. He took advantage of the higher water to get a good drink, but continued to keep his eyes looking around. Maybe, if he stayed still enough the creatures would go back to what they were doing. If there was one thing he was good at it would definitely be lazing around, so he had the patience.

Given enough time, the what he might eventually learn are called, Beavers would return to their task. A few larger ones even braving a swim passed the sty. Pinecones watched them chew at the trees, take branches and carry them through the water, even climb back up onto pile of them. He couldn’t help a small snort of surprise as he watched a small squad of beavers use their tails to start slapping away at the pile. It seemed to be making it even sturdier than before, as the waterflow seemed to have shifted before his eyes. It had gotten to the point he had to move more inland or else he would be stuck swimming with the creatures.

While swimming was definitely not a preference, maybe he could give these fellas a hand. Pinecones had no idea why the Beavers were working so hard to make all these changes to the river, but it definitely seemed like an important task. Wading further into the trees, why not help them get a few extra? The rising waters made it difficult to get a good running start to headbutt these trees, but surely with enough effort he might be able to break down a few. Or at the very least uproot some small ones.

His commotion caused most of the creatures to dive back into the deep water, some taking a perch on their woodpile to watch this clumsy sty more closely. Because this task was going anything but smoothly, it was hurting his head, his spikes were not jamming into the tree as effectively as he hopped. How were those rodents’ little mouths so much better at this than something as totally tanky as himself?

To save himself further embarrassment as he now had a small audience, he just uprooted some far smaller bushes and young trees instead of the big better suited ones. Once there was now more debris floating around in the shallow waters, Pinecone took his leave. Hoping to find a sunny field maybe a little further away from these hard workers. He was no cold and kind of embarrassed, so that was enough of… whatever this was for one day.
