Dam

The night was young when they left from their dens, meeting up under the cover of night. For the first time, in quite a while, members of the night pack were able to reunite under the cover of darkness. Cooing gently, Sirius brushed crests with his son, Orion, and father, Comet. Nebula was too busy to come with them on his hunt, currently busy caring for a single egg and refusing to leave its side. Tonights hunt had a goal of bringing back something they could easily carry back for her, preferably something on the smaller side that would leave no traces.

And it seemed Sirius already had a target in mind. With a low grumble and flick of his tail he took lead, Comet and Orion falling into lead behind him. It was a sight to see, three males with their bright red dimorphic crests showing their clear relation.

Soon they arrived at a river- or, what was once a river. Now it was a pond, water spilling over the edges of where it once would and sprawling across the ground. It was almost impossible to approach quietly, water splashing wherever they took a step. Comet hissed quietly, lifting up a foot and shaking it free of the mud. A splatter hit Orion in the face, causing him to shake his head in confusion and send a glare towards his grandfather- however, neither made any other move. There was a time for goofing around, but the time was not now.

Orion sniffed the air in confusion, cocking his head. The area smelled of wood and mud and some kind of rodent, but there was no sign of them. The only thing in the area was a large pile of wood and sticks, which was likely the source of the scent of wood and mud.

Curious, Comet stepped forward closer to the dam, nosing against part of the wood. The dam was large, easily larger than a cryolophosaurus. However, it seemed of little interest- why had Siruis brought them here? Poking his nose against the wood, Comet jumped back as a loud hiss and sharp orange teeth bit down where his snouth had just been. Beady black eyes peered back at him from inside the shelter of the dam, the only entrance being underwater and a few tiny holes alongside the side of the dam that one was now biting through.

Hissing back, Comet backed up before rejoining Comet and Siruis. He understood now- food was located within wood, and in all likelihood there would be more than one with how big this damn was. A good feast- if they were able to break the outer shell.

The three males put their head together as they tried to plan just how to break into the damn. Comet suggested they could just wait for them to come out, but Orion shot that down fast- there was only so much night left, and if they waited too long they could just flee down river where they had no chance of following. Sirius suggested taking down the damn itself- it would take quite a lot of effort, given how big it was, but it was possible- wood would not stand in the way of dinosaurs.

A plan put in place, they stalked forward as a group. Despite the fact that the beavers already knew they were there, they kept quiet in order to not spook them into fleeing before they could put a plan in motion. Both Orion and Comet held large sticks in their mouth- their role had to be started before they could actually take down the den. Moving in sync, they both used their nimble forelimbs to put the sticks into the water beneath the damn, jabbing them down where they suspected the entrances were. While it would not do much, the splashing would at least make them think twice before escaping at the front. And then it was time for the fun part.

With a loud shriek Siruis bit down on the wood of the damn, ignoring the slight pain of splinters sinking between his teeth. With equally ghoulish howls Orion and Comet sprung into action, Orion clambering on top of the damn to stomp and tear at it with his claws while Comet dug into the wood with this teeth, savagely ripping twigs and mud out. This was fun, almost a game to the three- their prey was trapped somewhere they could not escape, and all they had to do was open it up.

Orion, strangely enough, succeeded in ripping a hole in the damn first- and ripping the whole damn apart, the wood splintering and tearing beneath his feet as it caved in on itself with a groan. Letting out a shriek both Orion and the damn vanished, multiple smaller cries alerting them to the fear of the creatures inside.

Anxiously, Sirius and Comet watched the pile of wood. The water was just deep enough they could stand with minimal trouble, but Orion was still buried under piles of wood. The water rippled as a white head broke the pile- a large brown rodent clutched between sharp teeth. Sirius and Comet sighed in relief. Maybe they had only caught one in the end… but it was the experience that mattered (right?)
