SQ - Toast - Not a Drill
It was yet another suffocatingly humid and warm day on the isle. It felt like the air was pressing against everything around it. As if it was trying to shove everything else out of its way. The feathered, golden eyed cryo grumpily waddled along the shoreline. She avoided the sand as much as she could as the sun had heated it up to a near burning temperature and she had already made the mistake of stepping into it once.
Her partners were currently somewhere further down the shore, probably still looking for interesting things in the sand. She herself contemplated just running past the heated up sand and jumping in the oceans in hopes of cooling herself down, but she knew it would not be worth it in the end. The salt and the sand would get anywhere and instead of fighting off the humid air she would have to spend extra time in the sun to heat up her feathers to a fully dried state again before nightfall. The salt would be the most annoying part for sure, it would take her forever to get it all out of her feathers and if she didn’t succeed they could be damaged. Besides, she really didn’t feel like dealing with the frizz. Maybe she could convince her partners to help her. But in the end, the cons outweighed the pros.
The cryo looked out over the waves and her gaze drifted away towards the horizon. She could barely tell where the sky ended and the ocean began, had it not been for the small clouds that reflected at the top of the surface, distorted by the waves. It was mesmerizing. The movements of the waves, the way it caused the surface to ripple all the way from way beyond the horizon into the shoreline. She didn’t even notice that she had stopped walking. She just stood there, watching, before managing to snap out of it. She shook her whole body to ruffle up her feathery coat in hopes that it would let more air pass between them, cooling her body. She couldn’t, however, help but to keep her gaze out over the ocean.
Just breaching the surface of the water, something pointy and slightly triangular appeared. Toast wasn’t sure what it was but immediately felt curiosity wash over her, like the waves that washed over the shore, and she frantically started to look for a way to get closer without having to place her feet into the burning sand again. She had to find somewhere where she could investigate closer. She looked over the shoreline, trying to not let the moving triangle out of her sight, and saw a wooden pier not too far away. It was an abandoned and run down pier and she quickly sprinted towards it, keeping her eyes on the triangle as she moved on just close enough to the sand as to not step in it while also not falling from the degrading dirt and grass. She almost stumbled over her feet as she turned to the pier, she had to jump over the sand that had started to take over the wooden landing of the pier but it was a small jump for the cryo. She could now see how it reached into the depth of the ocean and her heart was beating fast as she saw the triangle moving closer to the pier. The thing was moving towards the shadowy parts that the man made structure cast on the surface of the water below. She was high over the water, which she didn’t mind, but it still managed to splash salty water onto her, if only a tiny bit. Her whole body was beating together with her heart in anticipation. This was exciting. She could barely contain herself as she made sure not to step down into the holes the water slowly had eroded away from the pier. She stopped at the ledge. There was a small piece of fence that had managed to keep itself standing. She did not trust it enough to brace against it. She instead got as close to the pier's edge as she could without losing her footing.
The triangle was moving closer. She wasn’t sure what she had spotted. Her eyes were wide as she waited, still. She didn’t want to scare whatever it was away from her, and it had started to dive under the surface just before it arrived close enough for her to see. She tried to anticipate where it would appear. She carefully and slowly moved her head around. The waves made it harder as they clashed against the wooden beams keeping the pier above the water's edge.
Toast’s eyes kept scanning over the surface, until she could finally get a clear look. Beneath her was a big, broad headed shark. She had never seen this type of shark before and was looking at it in awe. The head was such a weird shape, it almost didn't look like it belonged to the creature it was attached to.
The cryo laid down on the wooden structure and pressed her head underneath the fence to look down, to get a better look. The shark swam just underneath her and she happily shuffled her feet underneath her body, stepping in place as best as she could while laying on top of her own feet. She was a little sad that Fudge and Toffee weren't here to see this magnificent creature, they were way too far away for her to call out to them at this point too, so she laid there and quietly observed as the calming waves were flowing underneath her. She could probably fall asleep right then and there, if not for the shark peaking her interest.
Praise be my friends for sparking my creativity, smooches
