Tarnish was not the parent that Emerald wanted, and she definitely not the one he needed. Whenever he came to her, asking for help, food, or anything, she would give an exasperated sigh and growl at him if he could not do it himself. It got to the point where eventually he would not ask her, he would simply go out and scrounge what he could for himself. It meant that he was often underfed and underweight due to not being taught how to hunt, and goodness forbids he came across something larger than him because he couldn't fight either. Slowly, he drifted further and further from Tarnish's den, and he just did not come back. He doubted she would miss him.
