Survival can be hard work, especially when it comes to feeding yourself. Tempest wanted to be sure her son would grow up not only being a successful ambush predator, but also capable of using his smarts to catch his prey in other ways. In this case, learning how to build dams to trap fish. While not entirely sure what he was doing just yet, Ruai was more than happy to help collect the biggest sticks he could in order to help.
