Fade learned at a very early age that he was going to be on his own. Susurrus watched over them to make sure that no one ate her children, of course, but he would get no help in defending himself against his larger, more aggressive brother. If Hyperion decided to pick on Fade, there wasn't anything stopping him. Susurrus seemed to think that the two would sort themselves out whenever they got into some sort of spat, and left her children to whatever they got up to. Fade wasn't a fighter - all he could do was stay on his toes, and run.
