Quality Standards

Submissions for official Primeval Age activities have certain standards that must be met!
In general, every official submission must meet the following:

Be accurate to your character's current import
  • Stylizing your characters should not create new features.
-- For example, an overweight dino with a dewlap mimicking Flair, or feathers styled to look like manes, crests or hair.
  • Anatomy important to the species must be present; such as body proportions, snout length, decorative features, number of fingers and toes, etc.
-- For example, a Cryo cannot be drawn without a crest, Suchos must have long snouts, Utahs require their sickle claws.
  • Features not present on the import, such as feather crests, spikes, quills, etc. are not allowed for official artwork.
  • Markings should be accurate to the import, but can be simplified as long as they are roughly in the right area and recognisable.
  • Scars and accessories must be present unless there is a reason for them to be missing. This can be due to the dinosaur being younger and not having acquired them yet, or addtionally in the case of accessories, an interaction causing the item to be removed.

quality-simple-anatomy-correct.webp
Here's a correct example of simplified anatomy. It's still clear who each dinosaur is as they retain their key species traits and design accuracy. If this is not your usual style, then this would likely receive half EXP from the simplified modifier.

quality-proportions-incorrect.webp
You can stylise your characters' proportions but they shouldn't be too exaggerated when compared to the official import art. This Dacentrurus' neck and tail are too long to be accepted for quests or EXP.

quality-weight-correct.webp
Here's an example of correctly stylized proportions and weight in dinosaurs of the same species. Both still look like Styracosaurus with no extra added features, but have different silhouettes to one another!

missing-key-traits.webp

This example is incorrect as it's not clear what species this is as it lacks the anatomy and key features of any species. This would not be eligible for quests or EXP.

quality-para-feet.webp

Some species allow anatomy differences due to base updates; for example, you can choose to depict Parasaurolophus with toes or hooves! See each species' page for allowable variations.

quality-feathers-incorrect.webp

While this import is feathered, the art depicts them with larger tufts of feathers that are not accurate to the standard feathered variant that is on the import. Additionally, the crest and arms mimic the crested variant, and the lack of feathering on the thighs mimics scruffy.

quality-simple-markings.webp

This import has most of their markings correctly simplified, except for that fact that scutes is missing from the design. All markings must be present. Especially for complex markings and heavily spotted or striped dinosaurs, we don't expect all markings to be perfectly accurate!

Have some level of finish
  • Visual works must not be overly sketchy, rough, or unfinished.
  • Written works must not have too many typos, punctuation issues, or other issues that make it too difficult to read.

quality-sketchy-incorrect.webp
This piece is too sketchy to pass for a quest as both the lineart and colouring is rough; but would still be eligble for EXP.

quality-sketchybg-incorrect1.webp
This background is too sketchy to pass for a quest as both the lineart and colouring is rough; but would still be eligible for EXP.

quality-sketchybg-incorrect2.webp
This background is too roughly coloured and largely unrendered to pass for a quest; but would still be eligible for EXP.

Here's an example of literature with an acceptable amount of typos; the text is readable and the prompt is still clear. This would receive half EXP from the simplified modifier.
Savannah was n the hunt. She was totally at home on the plains where her pale colors and orsetttes psots made her blend in perfectly out in the open fields fo golden grass. She knew that as soon as she saw her prey she coudl pounce. Nothing could outpac her. She was speed incarnate . It wasn’t long before she found the obejct of her hunt. A herd of deer was wandering out of the forest that lined the edge of the grasslands and coming out to feed ont he grass. Unfortunately it wasn’t the only thing that she saw come out of the forest. Another carnotaurus was coming out as well from further away circling around the far side of the heerd of deer to surprise them from the other side. savannah’s temper flared. This was her hunt! This was her prey! How dare that other carno intrude on her territory! She roared, spoiling the hunt but at least the other carno wouldn’t get her deer either . Besides, she was fast. Even when the deer fled she could still catch up. The other carno was confused by her roar and the deer startled. She took off after them her claws digging into the grass and the earth and throwing up a cloud of dust behind her. Although the deer were a good distance away from her and running away and much closer to the other carno, she was faster than both the der and the other carno. She got to one of the slower members of the herd and took it down grabbing it by the haunches with her teeth and making the kill.

Here's an example of literature with formatting that makes it difficult to read. You can use format changes for emphasis or as a stylistic choice but the text should be readable.

The day that dawned hot and muggy and Vitra awoke to the sound of blackbirds calling in the marshas they flitted through the reeds with a begrudging sigh she heaved herself to her feet and shookmourningdewfromherfeathersoratleastwhat remained of it the bright sun was quickly winging it away into steam she straighten to her full height and squinting against the beam of light reflected of the many glassy pools and shallowgullies that carved made shapes through thick swamp plants in the lowlandwonderingwhy again she'd taken Neros advice to forage in this humid wet place in search of watercress he claimed they were a such a delicacy and worth searching for while Vitra didn’t much like for cabbage after all.

SHE CAREFULLY BEGAN TO MANUEVER HER WAY AWAY FROM THE DIRT SHE HAD REST ON AND STUCK HER FEET IN THE WATER WHICH MADE IT RIPPLE IN ALL DIRECTIONS AWAY AS SHE MOVED FURTHER OUT IN THE MARSH AND TRY TO IGNORE THE MUD SUCKING AT EACH STEP THE MANY FISH IN THE WATER DARTED AWAY AS SHE WALKED TO SMELLED AT THE AIR FOR THE UNIQUE SMELL OF WATER CRESS VITRA WATCHED DRAONFLIES AND WATER BUGS ALL MOVING AROUND IN THEIR MOURNING RUSH FOR HUNTING FOOD AND FELT A LITTLE SAD THEM FOR THEIR LIFE IN THIS SWAMP SUPPOSED THOUGH SHE WASNT VERY DIFFERENT SINCE SHE WAS ALSO OUT HERE IN THIS EARLY MORNING HOUR HUNTING FOR TASTY FOOD IN THE MARSH SO SHE TRIED TO FOCUS ON HER TASK AND KEPT SMILING THE AIR AS SHE CROSSED SHALLOW PONDS AND WADING THROUGH REEDS AND TANGLES OF MARSH PLANTS THAT CAUGHT ON HER FEATHERS AND MUD ON HER FEET.

Wire under water caught her foot and she had to use her claws and stop to reach forward and pull away the metal piece again wondering why she had listened to Nero and come out here to hunt for food instead of just staying in the forest where she could at least be dry while she looked for breakfast she kept walking until suddenly she smelled something special and looked around for the watercress that she could smell but it was just cabbage! Vitra found the cabbage half in the water and half on the dirt where tender green leaves, and she was able to put her face down to water and eat the plant even though she was thinking it was better than forest cabbage but she didn’t think it had been worthy all this work to find after all!

Submitted in good faith
  • This means your submissions must be submitted with the intention that you are following the requirements from the start.
  • Repeated instances of purposely submitting unfinished pieces, or pieces that knowingly do not meet requirements just to secure a place in the queue will be rejected and could result in further punishment.
  • This includes submitting last minute unfinished entries for time-limited events solely to get around the closing time.

No submissions will be accepted that contain the following
  • Any amount of AI generated images, text or assets.
  • Re-used linearts, sketches, background elements, poses, and text.
  • Traced or heavily referenced images and plagiarized text.
  • Pre-made assets, including clip art and photographs. This excludes background assets for 3D digital model scenes.

reused-assets.webp
This background reuses the same rocks, copy and pasted multiple times. These rocks would not count as an element in quests, despite the original rock being hand-drawn. If an image heavily reuses assets, it may not be eligible for quests.

reused-sketch.webp
This is an example of a reused sketch. Although both characters have some unique changes, the base sketch is heavily reused. Therefore, this would not be eligible for quests and would receive half EXP from the re-used asset modifier.

Using References

References are a normal and important part of the creative process! Many artists use references, and we do not expect you to draw everything from memory! However, there is an important difference between referencing in an acceptable way, and referencing too heavily, copying, and tracing.
Art that is deemed as being traced, or too heavily referenced, will not be able to be used in submissions nor counted for EXP. In these cases, when being corrected it will need to be entirely, or almost entirely recreated.

Acceptable Forms of Referencing

  • Looking at several images and using them collectively as inspiration for your own drawing.
  • Looking at one image and using it as inspiration for your own drawing. Be careful your own drawing does not resemble the original too closely or it will be rejected.
  • Color picking from royalty free images.
  • Tracing over 3D models you created yourself.
  • Studies based on skeletons or anatomical references. Be careful your drawing does not copy your source material too closely or it will be rejected.
  • Quoting or making reference to an existing piece of writing without copying large chunks.

Unacceptable Forms of Referencing

  • Tracing over game and movie screenshots, pictures of toys, or 3D models you did not create.
  • Directly copying poses from existing media; this includes 1:1 copies and copies that have slight adjustments.
  • Tracing over your own photographs, with the exception of tracing pictures of yourself, such as your arm or hand.
  • Directly copying large chunks of text from an existing book, story, etc.
